PANEL DISCUSSION ON "THE IDEA OF GENDER JUSTICE IN INDIA"
On Saturday, 14th December 2024, Alliance Française de Madras witnessed an enlightening panel discussion on "The Idea of Gender Justice in India," organized by The Indian Society for Universal Dialogue (ISUD), School of Excellence in Law. This event was a part of the prestigious India@100 series, reflecting on critical issues shaping modern India.

The discussion was moderated by Dr. Swarna Rajagopalan, founder of Prajnya. The discussion delved deep into the multifaceted challenges and opportunities in achieving gender justice in India.
Key Insights
Welcome Address and briefing of the dignitaries was given by Aswin Suren, founding President, ISUD. The discussion was initiated to understand the judiciary's vital role in advancing gender equality. Justice Prabha Sridevan highlighted the importance of diversity on the bench, advocating for women’s perspectives to reshape legal norms. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh emphasized the transformative impact of women judges in fostering equitable legal frameworks. Justice P.T. Asha shared her experiences with gender bias, drawing attention to the need for systemic reforms to empower women within the judiciary. Senior advocate Sriram Panchu called for modernizing personal laws to dismantle entrenched gender discrimination, reiterating the judiciary's power to drive social change. Dr. Swarna Rajagopalan aptly noted that gender justice is not just a women's issue but a societal imperative, challenging patriarchal norms that limit potential across genders.
The French Consul General, who was one of the guests of honour shared his ideas on the French word ‘Parité’, which emphasizes gender equality. Other guests of honour include the Australian Deputy Consul General, Senior Advocate Mr R Parthasarathy, Advocate Maimoona Badshah and others who graced the event with their presence. With an audience of over 120 participants, the event featured compelling discussions and a dynamic Q&A session, fostering an engaging exchange of ideas.
Conclusion
A thank you note was shared by Aruna Sree, General Secretary, ISUD towards the end of the event. The event majorly pressed the urgent need for dialogue and action on gender justice in India. By addressing societal biases and legal barriers, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society for all. The insights shared by the panellists and the enthusiastic participation of the audience made this discussion a powerful call to action for progress.
